Building a Strong Social Media Presence for Nonprofits: Strategies, Goals, and Best Practices

A social media presence is essentially a requirement in this day and age, as nearly all generations participate using one of the many platforms available.  It is especially powerful for nonprofits who are working with a limited budget as it is an inexpensive way to promote your organization through an overall awareness of what you stand for and a place to display your goals.  However, as with any tool, understanding how it works and having a strategy for presenting your nonprofit are imperative.

An excellent starting point is to determine which platform or platforms will be best, and what your goal is surrounding that use.  Is your presence going to be for informative purposes only?  Or a way to interact with your community?  Next it is beneficial to compile a strategy that clearly presents your nonprofits mission and vision.  This will often include images and a core base that will ideally capture the essence of what you do.  Finally, the responsibility of posting and interacting needs to be clearly identified so that your social media presence can be successful.

A popular acronym to help firm up your social media strategy is SMART.  This stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based.  An article on the Constant Contact website gives a great breakdown of each element, similar to what is presented below.

SMART

  • Specific: Specific goals ensure you or your team can focus on getting that said task done in a specific timeframe.
  • Measurable: Measurable objectives show your progress. Many social media platforms grant you access to analytics so that you can adapt.
  • Attainable: Goals should be attainable and consider time, budget, and resources. It is helpful to begin with narrow goals and avoid setting goals that have little chance of success.
  • Relevant: Make certain that your goal reflects your organization’s mission and speak positively and professionally to who you are.
  • Time-based: Time-based deadlines are a surefire way to keep your priorities and motivation in place.

Once your strategy is determined and your social media footprint is ready to be established, it is important to keep in mind that it is a public platform and will represent your organization’s identity.  Maintaining positivity and professionalism is paramount as these posts represent who you are, for better or worse.  There are also legal and ethical considerations, the least of which are the terms of service on each individual platform.

A few tips for maintaining professionalism begin with using proper grammar, tone and avoiding inappropriate language.  It is also advisable to post only relevant content that can be viewed as valuable to what your nonprofit organization stands for.   Maintain a practice of positive and thoughtful engagement.  And when in doubt pause a moment to consider the impact or interpretation of the post.

In conclusion, establishing a robust social media presence is crucial for nonprofits aiming to maximize their impact and outreach on a limited budget. By carefully selecting the appropriate platforms and defining clear, SMART goals, organizations can effectively communicate their mission and engage meaningfully with their community. It’s not only about sharing content but also about reflecting your nonprofit’s values through professional and ethical interactions. As you navigate the dynamic world of social media, remember that every post contributes to your organization’s public image. By adhering to best practices in communication and continually assessing your strategy, you ensure that your social media efforts remain a powerful tool in furthering your nonprofit’s goals and fostering a positive and engaging online presence.
